Traveling to India (Important Information)
U.S. citizens need a valid passport and Indian visa to enter and exit India for any purpose. Please ensure you have the correct type of visa for your planned activity in India. If you have the incorrect visa you may be refused entry. U.S. citizens seeking to enter India solely for tourist purposes, and who plan to stay no longer than 60 days, may apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA) at least four days prior to their arrival in lieu of applying for a regular tourist visa.
India e-Visa ETAs are double entry visas. When you first arrive in India and present the ETA to the Immigration Officer an e-Visa stamp will be endorsed in your passport. Your second entry to India must occur within 60 days from this date of stamping. Only 2 ETAs may be issued within one year. If you are in need of more trips please apply for a visa at your local Indian consulate. Be sure to visit the U.S. State Department website for the latest travel advisories related to India. And it’s always important when traveling abroad to understand the health and vaccination protocols outlined by the Centers for Disease Control.
Travel tips:
Never drink the tap water in India, and avoid food that may have been washed in it. As a precaution, avoid ice, ice cream, salads, and fruit you haven't peeled yourself. Be aware of pickpocketing and scams, such as taxi and rickshaw drivers who insist on taking you to specific locations. Feet are considered to be unclean in India, so if you touch something with your feet it's appropriate to apologize. Many Indians give special attention to foreigners. Many locals stare at tourists and will often ask to take photos with them. Toilet paper can be sparse, so it never hurts to carry some with you when you venture out.
