Kazakhstan Visa Requirements to Visit Saryarka

This week's UNESCO World Heritage Site is rarely visited, but richly rewarding for adventure travelers and nature lovers.
Located in Kazakhstan, the Saryarka World Heritage Site consists of two separate regions: the Naurzum State Nature Reserve and Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve. The reserves encompass two very different environments: the grassy, windswept grasslands of the Kazakh steppe and wetlands surrounding both fresh and saltwater lakes.
UNESCO notes that these wetlands are "of outstanding importance for migratory water birds, including globally threatened species, among them the extremely rare Siberian white crane, the Dalmatian pelican, Pallas’s fish eagle, to name but a few."

Tucked away in Kazakhstan's Tamgaly Gorge, surrounded by high grasslands called steppes that have nourished nomads and their herds for millenia, is an incredible collection of petroglyphs.
The petroglyphs in Tamgaly, today's featured UNESCO World Heritage Site, date back to the Bronze Age in most cases. However, since the site has been continuously inhabited, some were carved as recently as the early 20th century. The carvings are definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in archaeology.

You've heard of people hunting with hawks and falcons, of course, but what about eagles? In Kazakhstan and other nearby countries, hunting with golden eagles, called berkutchy, is an ancient tradition that goes back centuries.
However, it's also a tradition that's become very rare. According to this article on the Epoch Times, there are only about 50 professional eagle hunters left in the entire country. When the Soviets took control of Kazakhstan, people's traditional nomadic way of life was disrupted and eagle hunting was banned.

When you think about Kazakhstan, the first thing that comes it mind is most likely the title character of the movie Borat. However, if you were to actually travel to Kazakhstan, you might be surprised. The country has a growing economy, an educated populace (according to Wikipedia, the literacy rate is 99.5%) and is far from the cultural backwater portrayed in the movie.
