To help lure tourists in 2011, Tanzania is designating a new national park on tiny Saa-Nane Island. The island, located in Lake Victoria near the town of Mwanza, is already a wildlife sanctuary and will soon become Tanzania’s 16th National Park. According to AllAfrica.com, the park will also include two neighboring islands in order to prevent illegal fishing, poaching and other illegal activities.
Mr. Donatus Bayona, the acting conservator of the proposed park, told AllAfrica.com that while the island is small, it is beautiful and home to lots of different wildlife:
“The proposed National park is home to mammals like the Impala, Rock Hyrax, Velvet Monkeys, Wild Cats, Clawless Otters and De-brazzas Monkeys, the aquatic part of the park will offer all types of fish, crocodiles, water snakes and Monitor lizards, other reptiles include tortoises, grass snakes, pythons and agama lizards.”
Also according to the article, scientists studying the island have determined that the island can support a population of zebras, gazelles and dik-diks, and there are plans to introduce them soon.
To visit Tanzania’s newest national park, you’ll need a Tanzanian visa. Visas can be obtained at the airport on arrival, but if you apply ahead of time you won’t regret it as you’ll be able to get out of the airport and to your hotel much more quickly. Either way, here’s what you need for the visa:
